ART THERAPY
in Miami for Trauma and Anxiety
An integrated approach to healing combining body awareness, art and mindfulness to help you break free from patterns and trauma.
WHAT IS ART THERAPY?
Art Therapy is a mental health profession that implements the use of art-making and the creative practice to support clients in feeling more connected and understanding their emotions and somatic sensations. Art Therapy can help you better understand, express and identify your emotions, process past experiences, increase a sense of calm and ease and offer a unique perspective to healing.
Engaging in Art Therapy supports the body in processing and coping with past trauma by using more than words, speaking the language of emotions and where memories are stored. Some benefits include: trauma healing, reducing anxiety and stress, enhance self-awareness, foster creativity, connect with your inner child and access both internal and external coping skills.
You don’t need to be good at or have any experience in art-making to engage in Art Therapy. Sessions focus more on the experience of the art-making process over the product.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN AN ART THERAPY SESSION?
Every session can look different and is tailored to your specific needs, the following is an outline of what may happen in a session.
-
We will start with a verbal check-in to reflect on your week, identify what you are feeling or any challenges that have presented themselves. The check-in also serves as a great time to reflect on anything that may have come up from the previous session.
-
If it is feeling challenging to access and understand your emotions and inner experience, we will use a somatic practice to help you connect with your body and identify your feelings. This is an opportunity to ground into your body and the space.
-
We will use different art materials such as paint, colored pencils, markers, watercolors, collage, etc. to address your treatment goals.
As your therapist, I may suggest materials or a directive to guide the art-making. The focus on the art is to support you in your process, rather than the product. You do not need to have any previous experience in art-making to engage.
-
We will come back together in conversation to explore your art-making experience, any insight gained and next steps for continued treatment.
This is a time to get curious about themes or symbols that were present in the art and explore coping skills to support you in your journey.
